BY DEV KUMAR

Sit-Com, short for Situational Comedy, is a genre of comedy, first experimented in Chicago in 1926, in which a fixed set of characters carry forward a story from episodes to episode. And today anyone who is reading this knows about famous sitcoms such as Friends, Brooklyn 99, The Bing Bang Theory, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, The Simpsons, etc. and has watched at least one of these (well if you haven’t you are missing out on a lot in life). So today, let’s talk about some very famous and loved sitcoms, their plots, why you should watch at least one of them and how it matters.

1. F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Whether it’s the underrated-overrated debate or the unreal level of relatability the audience feels for this show, Friends has been loved by people of all age groups and moods for the last 26 years. The first episode aired in 1994 and since then, the audience made the six friends their family. The show had a hassle-free run for the next ten years and made its fan base all over the world. The show ended in 2004 breaking people’s hearts but leaving them with so many beautiful memories. What makes it one of the most loved sitcoms ever is the fact that people born after the show ended, still watch it with the same amount of love and appreciation. You can watch it on Netflix.

2. THE OFFICE

As the name suggests, this American sitcom is set inside an office. It showcases the everyday work lives of the employees at the fictional “Dunder Mifflin Paper Company”. The first episode, “An American Workplace”, aired in March 2005. Since then there was no looking back for the mockumentary sitcom. Developed and created by Greg Daniels, the show lasted for nine seasons. The last episode of the series aired in May 2013, making ‘Michael Scott’ played by ‘Steve Carell’ one of the most loved fictional characters of the sitcom world. It’s available on Amazon Prime Video.

3. BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

Currently running successfully on NBC, Brooklyn Nine-Nine revolves around a young and talented NYPD Detective in Brooklyn’s fictional 99th Precinct. The slapstick humour starts when immature police detective Jake Peralta (played by Andy Samberg) comes in conflict with his forbidding and momentous commanding officer, Captain Raymond Holt (played by Andre Braugher). The seventh season of this police procedural sitcom aired from February to April, in 2020. The first season started in September 2013, when the first episode aired on FOX. The previous six seasons of this quirky comedy are available to binge on Netflix.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are various sitcoms available to stream on different platforms. Situational Comedies help you feel various emotions of laughter, happiness, love, friendship, hardships, etc. They make you feel better and bring a smile on your face, no matter what your mood. So just grab a bucket of popcorn and dive into the world of amusing sitcoms and watch yourself clicking the ‘next episode’ button without giving it a second thought.
